Apprenticeship scheme 2017

Apply for apprenticeships online by visiting

In 2011, we started the councils apprenticeship scheme, with six involved in the first pilot. It was so successful that its annual programme was launched.

Every year we look to recruit new apprentices and are inviting applications from 16-24 year olds to start the professional career with us learning valuable skills on the job whilst obtaining a professional qualification.

We would like to work with you to help you  grow as a person, and to help you gain new skills, learn and develop your experience to help shape and deliver what we do here so we give the best service possible to our 144,000+ residents.

How does that sound?

There’s never a dull moment here - the work we do is continually changing as lots of things dictate our priorities and influence what activities we need to focus on, so no two days are ever the same.

Did you know, we have over 200 different kinds of roles and are the most diverse employer in the Borough?

Many people don’t realise the range of opportunities that exist within the Council from plumbers to carers to administrators to gardeners…

We genuinely believe in our Apprenticeship programme and are really proud and committed and we want to continue to provide opportunities to recruit young people from our very own Borough.  This ensures we keep encouraging new and fresh ideas, giving local opportunities to local people to do the best for our Borough and help support our future.

We asked our existing apprentices what they think about working here and this is what they said:

“The highlight for me is being part of a team that truly helps the public gain confidence, as well as focusing on people becoming more independent”

Mohammed C (Adults Services)

“Being an Apprentice has given me a fantastic opportunity to gain work experience and receive an excellent education at the same time”

Anthony O (Policy, Planning and Performance)

“The highlight of being an Apprentice for me is being able to earn a wage whilst learning and developing working skills for the future” Chloe C (Health and Social Care)

In order to ensure we can provide the necessary training and development to support the qualification you will undertake, the minimum requirements are:

  • No age restrictions
  • Be able to demonstrate a good standard of English and Maths.
  • Available to start in September 2017.

Case Study

“I have always wanted to work with local businesses, schools and colleges to help young people develop their skills and my apprenticeship gave me the confidence and skills to do that.

I am very proud to be an apprentice and have been invited to give speeches/talks at local schools & colleges by my Chief Executive, to represent apprentices for young people. I look forward to going to university part-time once I finish my apprenticeship whilst continuing to build my career within the Council”

Henry Clark – Apprentice with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council

Real jobs and real careers with training

Apprenticeships are real jobs and real careers with training. As paid employees, apprentices earn a wage and learn on the job. They go to college and work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Many employers see apprentices as the best way of growing their business with loyal and qualified employees.

If you're over 16 you can apply to become an apprentice, whether you are unemployed, leaving school, are already in work or wanting to start a new career. Apprenticeships can offer a real alternative to university and higher education without the fees.
