The Register Office in Blackburn holds all records of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnership formations that have taken place in Blackburn with Darwen since July 1837.

Genealogy is a fast growing pastime for many people. We endeavour to comply with all requests received but we cannot undertake extensive and vague searches.

There are extensive tools family historians can access.

  • Blackburn Library's Community History Department holds microfiche copies of the General Register Office Index, sometimes known as the Saint Catherine's House indexes, which provide a district, year and quarter. This information can also be found on Ancestry and Find My Past (see below).
  • Ancestry and Find My Past - You can view millions of family history records for free via these websites. Access is available in any of Blackburn with Darwen Libraries, with your Library ticket. This service is not available from home.
  • Blackburn central library has a family history section holding various source materials, such as parish records, local papers etc.
  • There is also a local family history society whose members are welcoming and happy to pass their expertise onto new starters.
  • The largest resource available, however, is the Internet. Genealogy is one of the largest categories. Just type “family history” into your search engine and stand back for the thousands of sites available.
  • Cottontown is the library's digital resource providing a wealth of local history information and a large collection of images about the rise and fall of the cotton industry and the effects on Blackburn and Darwen.

Blackburn with Darwen, in conjunction with the Blackburn family history society, is in the process of putting all Blackburn with Darwen indexes on the Web. This is very much a work-in-progress and to date not all the indexes have been inputted, but the work continues. We are grateful to the society and its members for the valuable work they are doing for the benefit of all. The indexes can be found on

The site is easy to navigate and has other Lancashire districts.
