Harry Blackwell and Square Meadow

Harry Blackwell and Square MeadowA new sports facility on the old Moorland School cricket field is being planned after concerned residents came together to bring the disused land back into use.

After the closure of the school in July 2012, the issue of what to do with the playing field behind the former school had not been resolved.

That was until a concerned resident, Mr Harry Blackwell, approached the Council earlier this year determined to get a response of what was going to happen with this strip of land.

Councillor Kate Hollern, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, met Mr Blackwell to discuss his own vision for the former sports field.

After several discussions, it was agreed that he was to be donated the land through the Your Call scheme.

Mr Blackwell said “I am hoping to return the area to its former glory for the benefit of the whole community. If the excellent support that I have received from the council through the your call scheme continues, then together we will hopefully see the successful fulfilment of this joint project.”

To help Mr Blackwell in his endeavour, the council organised a your call event to help prepare the land for further development. It was held on Saturday the 30th November with the event attracting over 30 volunteers.

Councillor Hollern said: “I am really pleased to give Harry this land through the Your call scheme.”

“This emphasises our commitment to the concerns of our residents. The scheme allows the council to give residents the means to improve their communities and in turn improve the borough.”

“This is the largest your call scheme to date and working with Harry I know it can be a success.”

“We had a really great day on Saturday and I urge any residents that are interested in the project to attend upcoming Your Call events.”
